How we approach shower & bathroom tile on site

A shower is a waterproofing job with tile on top. The tile is decoration; the system behind it is the product. This is where showers fail, and they fail slowly and invisibly until a ceiling stains downstairs.

Products from different waterproofing systems are not tested together, and mixing them voids both manufacturer warranties. It is extremely common and almost never disclosed.

We flood test before tiling. Filling the pan and leaving it overnight is the only way to know the waterproofing works, and finding a problem then costs hours rather than a full rebuild.

Changes of plane get caulk, not grout. Grout is rigid and the corner between wall and floor moves; grouting it means a crack in the first year and a leak path shortly after.

FAQ

Shower & Bathroom Tile, asked and answered

Why do showers leak, and how is it prevented?

Showers leak through the substrate, not the tile — water gets through grout and finds a wall or a pan that was never waterproofed. A shower is built as a waterproof box: a sloped pan with a bonded membrane, walls covered in a membrane or a foam board system, and the corners, the niche and the curb detailed with the same. The tile is decoration over it.

Grout or silicone in the shower corners?

Silicone, or a color-matched flexible sealant, in every change of plane — corners, the floor-to-wall joint, around the curb and the niche — because those joints move and grout cracks when they do. Grout is for the field. A shower with grout in the corners is one whose corners are cracked, and it is one of the places water starts getting in.
