Subfloors and slabs in Brentwood: what they mean for tile
Newer houses have plywood or OSB subfloors and fiberglass shower units, and the tile shower conversion is the common job; the substrate is usually sound and the waterproofing is the work.
Outdoor patios and steps under trees stay damp and grow algae, and the stone or tile chosen for them is textured and set for drainage.
The substrate — plywood over joists, a slab, a bonus-room floor on a long span — decides the preparation, and the setter looks under the floor before quoting.
The ground moves the floor — a slab that cracks with the clay, a crawl that flexes the subfloor — and tile over either is set on a membrane that absorbs the movement.
A bonus-room bath sits over the garage on a long-span floor, and the floor is stiffened before tile goes down, or the grout cracks with the first winter.

The tile problems we see in Brentwood
A lot of the recent Nashville build boom used large-format tile over floors that were never flattened for it, which is the single most common cause of the hollow-sounding tiles we get called about.
- A shower leaking into the ceiling below
- Edges you catch with a bare foot
- Stone that has stained and was never sealed
- A layout that ends in a sliver at the wall
Mixing waterproofing systems. Products from different systems are not tested together, and the manufacturer warranty for both is void the moment they are combined.
