Why does my grout keep cracking along the same line?
Movement underneath. Grout is rigid and does not tolerate flex, so a cracking line usually means the substrate deflects — an inadequate subfloor, missing uncoupling membrane, or a change of plane where a flexible caulk joint should have been used instead of grout. Regrouting the same line without addressing the movement means the same crack again within a year.
What does it mean if tiles sound hollow underfoot?
The tile has debonded from the substrate — the thinset either did not achieve full coverage when it was set, or the bond has failed. A hollow tile is not necessarily loose yet, but it is on its way, and it will eventually crack or lift. Isolated hollow tiles can be lifted and reset; a whole floor sounding hollow is an installation failure.
Why is my shower leaking into the room below?
Waterproofing failure behind the tile, in almost every case. Tile and grout are not waterproof — the membrane behind them is, and if it was omitted or badly detailed at the corners and the drain, water passes straight through. This is why a shower cannot be repaired from the surface: the fix is removing the tile and rebuilding the waterproofing.
What drives the cost of a tile installation?
Labor to set it, not the tile. Small formats and mosaics cost far more per square foot to install than large-format tile because there are more pieces. Patterns, herringbone, borders and niches all add labor. Substrate preparation, leveling and waterproofing are separate and substantial. A showcase tile at a low installed price usually means preparation has been priced out.
Does grout need sealing?
Cement-based grout does, periodically, particularly in showers and on floors — it is porous and stains and harbors mold without it. Epoxy grout does not, which is one reason it is used in wet areas despite being harder to install and more expensive. Sealing is straightforward homeowner maintenance and is the most commonly skipped step after a tile job.
