How we approach natural stone on site
Natural stone is beautiful and unforgiving. It stains, it etches, it varies piece to piece, and none of that is a defect — it is the material. Anyone selling it as low maintenance is misleading you.
Veining is laid out dry and agreed before anything is fixed. Stone is not uniform, and the difference between a considered layout and a random one is the difference between a feature and a mess.
Light stone needs white setting material. Gray thinset shows through marble and travertine as a shadow, and it cannot be undone once it has cured.
Sealing is a maintenance item rather than a one-off. Marble and travertine will stain from wine, oil, citrus and a good deal else, and the seal wears. We tell you the interval and which cleaners will strip it.

FAQ
Natural Stone, asked and answered
How is natural stone tile different to install?
It is porous, it varies from piece to piece, and it is less forgiving. The stone is sealed before grouting so the grout does not stain it, the pieces are dry-laid and arranged so the veining and color flow the way you want them — and you approve that layout before anything is set — and it is cut with care because it chips. Marble and travertine in particular need the right setting materials and a sealer maintained afterwards.
Does natural stone tile need sealing?
Yes, and again periodically. Marble, travertine, limestone and slate are porous and take stains from oil, wine and colored liquids; a penetrating sealer stops most of that. Polished granite and quartzite are denser and need less. The test is whether water darkens the stone; if it does, it is time.
